When a tooth that has previously been treated with a root canal continues to cause pain, or the tooth fails to heal properly, you may be referred for endodontic retreatment. Endodontic retreatment is also referred to as root canal retreatment.

A tooth that was previously treated with a root canal may need retreatment because:

• Complex canals were not identified and treated during your first root canal

The endodontic retreatment procedure is very much like a root canal. Our root canal specialists will open the affected tooth, and remove the biocompatible material that was used to fill the tooth. The canals inside the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned, and any infection will be treated. Our endodontists will ensure that narrow or curved canals are reshaped to prevent future infection. Then the tooth will be resealed, and you’ll return to your general dentist to place the permanent dental crown.
